Zach is the owner of Ballast CrossFit and his journey towards this adventure started trying out a free CrossFit class while he was stationed in Japan. Before that time, his fitness included weightlifting, running and swimming which helped him get in shape upon joining the Military. CrossFit was a fun way to lift weights that seemed to increase the functionality of the body . It was no longer about appearance as much as it was about performance.

CrossFit has helped so many individuals gain control back over their lives and health. His goal as a coach is to educate people in the gym to be smart in their training, lift for longevity, and make their way to getting stronger. “I genuinely love working out and helping others reach their fitness goals. That passion makes coming to work enjoyable.” After some bad decisions that landed him on his way out of the military, Zach decided that it was time to make some changes to head down a different path. He started taking CrossFit seriously and spent many hours training to surround myself with a community built on hard work. Zach found a place to stay for $250 dollars a month with some friends and slept on the couch for months while I trained and went to school. Becoming a good competitor helped me in transition into becoming a coach, but that is not what makes me a good coach. With the ability to motivate and inspire others is really what helped me become a great coach. That, along with the ability to communicate well with others, understanding of how to train hard & smart, and how nutrition and supplementation play a role in performance and health make me a great coach. I am a firm believer in pushing in hard times and developing a mindset to get you through. Life is tough so you better be ready.

We established Ballast in 2015 with the hopes of creating an environment that people would look forward to for the best hour of their day. I say we, because there has been help with every step along the way to keep this ship afloat and want to say thank you to all who have supported Ballast through its voyage.

My goal is to help people understand why eating nutrient dense foods along with moving well and moving often are key ingredients to living a quality life. To help people dig deep in discomfort to come out the other side stronger and more resilient. To help people see that they can do “it” too. I believe we accomplish this by helping people with genuine knowledgeable coaching while creating an environment for inspiration and motivation. I strive to work well with others and do my best to meet that person where they are at to help them find small successes. I work towards making people feel comfortable in what can seem like a very intimidating environment so that they are able to focus on “you vs. you” to be 1% better each day.

I’ve been doing CrossFit since 2013 and coaching since September 2019. My favorite lift to coach happens to be my favorite lift to perform, the back squat. I really enjoy helping others reach their goals whether in fitness or just general goals they have set for themselves in life. I also enjoy trying to inspire others through pushing my own limits and showing others what one can achieve with hard work and dedication. I have done this with some of my biggest fitness accomplishments such as lunging 800 meters everyday for 200 consecutive days, running 12 5ks in 12 months, or finishing a my first half marathon.

Coach Chris started his CrossFit journey in February 2021 when Ballast welcomed him with open arms. He immediately became motivated by the progress he was making each month and dedicated his time to learning to move well. September that same year, he decided to earn his CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Certificate and came to fall in love with the CrossFit Training Philosophy. He knew that he wanted to help people improve their physical well-being. It wasn’t until he started coaching that CrossFit truly changed his life. He developed a passion for sharing his knowledge with the community at Ballast, but would occasionally stumble across not having the knowledge to rehabilitate athletes dealing with injuries or deep anatomical weaknesses. This was the sign of his newfound purpose in life. After being given the opportunity to work as a full-time coach at Ballast, Coach Chris quit his career of being a mechanic and has now dedicated his time to studying to become a Physical Therapist to better himself as a coach. “My goal is to help our athletes understand how their bodies are designed to move. I hate to see when our athletes’ performance is restricted due to an injury or weakness. I want to be able to pinpoint the problem, fix it, and get our athletes moving pain-free again.”
